Tradition takes flight in Rice & Rocks, a picture book celebrating culture and diversity. Giovanni's friends are coming over for Sunday dinner, and his grandmother is serving rice and beans. Giovanni is embarrassed he does not like 'rice and rocks' and worries his friends will think the traditional Jamaican dish is weird. But his favorite Auntie comes to the rescue. She and Giovanni's pet parrot, Jasper, take him on a magical journey across the globe, visiting places where people eat rice and rocks. This exciting story celebrates the varied traditions of every culture while also highlighting the delicious similarities that bring us all together.
Take a look inside the book...
I really enjoyed this book and enjoyed reading it to K. We eat rice and beans and never though it was called rocks before so that was really neat. K at first was like why are people eating rocks? So of course as we are reading I am explaining that is what some people call them. Everyone normally eats the same kind of food but they are all called something different and they eat those meals for certain days or traditions. We are introduced to Giovanni and his parrot Jasper. Giovanni's grandmother is making her traditional Sunday dinner but what if his friends think the meal is weird. Well Giovanni, Jasper and his Aunt go on an adventure to see if others eat the same meal as him and his family.
I thought the illustrations were really lovely in the book.
K thought the statue of Louis Armstrong was really cool and how he signed his name on papers. I think that this book is a great one to read to children from ages 5 on up. As you are reading you are learning about other cultural traditions which I think that kids should be informed on that kind of thing.
I hope to see more by this author.
